How should a stablecoin be classified when only an intermediary can request redemption?
Authority to submit a redemption request and entitlement to its proceeds require separate examination. For a French finance team preparing IFRS reporting, the closing question is specific: what asset does the company hold when its provider is the issuer’s sole point of contact?
This article examines redemption terms and execution evidence. It complements IFRS004, which addresses the absence of a direct issuer contract. It does not determine French statutory accounting or the regulatory compliance of a payment route.
The established framework and the unresolved question
IAS 32 paragraph 11 includes, among other items, contractual rights to receive cash or another financial asset. Paragraph 13 explains contracts; AG7 addresses contractual chains. The assessment therefore examines entitlements beyond access to an interface. [S1]
The following framework is BECTRA’s method for analysing hypothetical contracts. It assigns no classification to any actual token or provider.
Distinguish three contractual arrangements
• Agency: the provider submits an instruction on the company’s behalf. Record who retains entitlement to the proceeds, who bears a refusal and what obligation remains after submission. An agency appointment alone does not establish the provider’s own payment debt.
• Payment undertaking: the provider itself promises a determinable payment when identified conditions are met. Examine that specific claim, its obligor and its conditions. Do not describe it as a direct claim against the issuer.
• Exit service: the provider seeks a buyer or quotes a price when requested, without a prior payment undertaking. Continue assessing the asset held; this service cannot simply be equated with promised redemption at par.

Worked example: 50,000 units and EUR 300 in fees
A French company holds a hypothetical 50,000-unit position for IFRS reporting. The assumed contract provides EUR 1 per unit following acceptance, a EUR 300 service charge and payment within two business days. Only the intermediary may submit the request to the issuer.
The settlement tracker shows EUR 50,000 expected gross proceeds, EUR 300 in fees and EUR 49,700 expected net cash flow. This calculation describes the assumed settlement route; it establishes neither fair value nor carrying amount. Accounting for the fees and measuring the asset require separate assessment. [S2]
Three documents move the closing assessment forward: the dated instruction, acceptance confirmation and the clause naming the payment obligor. A wallet statement establishes a quantity; it does not confirm these three matters. Where acceptance remains outstanding, record the request’s status without presenting EUR 49,700 as certain cash proceeds.
The consolidation manager should also ask whether minimum quantities, suspensions or preliminary checks prevent submission. Distinguish conditions for exercising a right, operational delays and an unestablished entitlement. Exit difficulties require investigation; they do not settle classification on their own.

Build the redemption evidence file
• Request: identifier, quantity, date, satisfied conditions and authorised person.
• Undertaking: applicable clause, beneficiary, obligor, amount, fees and due date.
• Execution: acceptance, rejection or pending status, settlement advice and bank reconciliation.
• Conclusion: asset assessed, unresolved legal questions, measurement evidence and approving owner.
BECTRA can prepare this position record and a confirmation request addressing the obligor, amount and settlement conditions. The deliverable gives the CFO, consolidation team and reviewer a common basis for their conclusion. Ambiguous contractual terms require assessment by the appropriate legal adviser.
Conclusion
When an intermediary controls submission, establish what it does and what it owes. That distinction supports classification of the actual entitlement and monitoring of settlement without assuming that operational access creates a receivable.
