Redemption rights: what supports classifying a stablecoin as a financial asset?
A French subsidiary holds stablecoins and submits an IFRS reporting package. Group finance asks for the basis of its classification. A wallet extract supports a recorded position; it does not describe the redemption obligation attached to that position. The file must connect the balance, the reporting entity and the party obliged to pay.
The useful output is a conclusion that a group reviewer can follow: which documents establish the right, which clauses affect its exercise and which questions remain open? BECTRA's approach below is designed for an IFRS reporting file. Contract enforceability may require a separate legal assessment.
Start with the accounting criterion
IAS 32.11 includes a contractual right to receive cash or another financial asset from another entity. Paragraph 13 explains that a contractual agreement has clear economic consequences which the parties have little discretion to avoid, usually because it is legally enforceable. A contract need not be written. [S1]
The accounting paper must connect the documented rights with the actual holding. Terms published by an issuer group may concern a different legal entity, product or holder category. Establishing that connection is part of BECTRA's analytical method, rather than an additional IFRS requirement.
Build the file around five questions

Who must pay? Record the obligor's legal name and the clause establishing its obligation. A token's commercial name identifies a product; it does not identify the counterparty with sufficient precision.
Which company can request payment? Match the right to the legal entity preparing the reporting package. A subsidiary should not assume that its parent's redemption arrangements cover its own holding. Obtain confirmation of the contracting party and beneficiary where the documents are unclear.
What must be delivered? Identify the promised currency or asset, the calculation and the settlement mechanism. Keep the operative clause. A market quotation and an offer to buy tokens from a third party are different evidence from an obligor's payment undertaking.
What conditions govern exercise? List identification requirements, restrictions, suspension provisions and outstanding documentation. These should remain visible in the paper. An operational formality alone does not establish the absence of a right: the review must assess what the condition actually does to the contractual relationship.
Which evidence covers the relevant date? Archive dated terms, documents accepted by the company, evidence of the holding and correspondence resolving ambiguities. The reviewer should be able to trace each conclusion to a clause without rebuilding the research.
Apply the European framework to the right entity
For EMTs within its scope, MiCA Article 49 gives holders a claim against the issuer and redemption at par on request at any time. It also addresses disclosure of redemption conditions and prohibits redemption fees subject to its stated Article 46 reservation. [S2]
These regulatory rights must be considered alongside the holder's contractual arrangements when applying IAS 32. A regulatory category or statutory claim does not remove the need to establish the company's actual relationship.
As a documentary example, Circle's redemption policy dated 15 September 2026 distinguishes EEA and non-EEA USDC holders. For corporate holders that are not existing customers, it sets out a redemption-only Circle Mint account process and identification and transaction checks. [S3]
A French subsidiary should therefore verify its own documentation and redemption route. A subsidiary in Nigeria or Kenya requires a fresh review of the terms applicable to that entity. The European file does not establish its rights or answer local exchange-control or payment-permission questions.
Worked example: split the rights assessment before concluding

Fictional example. A French subsidiary reports 250,000 units of a stablecoin: 180,000 in an identified company wallet and 70,000 on a service provider's statement. The group package combines them in a single line.
The consolidation manager opens two rights files. For the wallet holding, the team collects the applicable holder terms and arranges a review of the redemption clauses. For the provider balance, it also obtains the service agreement to establish what the subsidiary owns and who must satisfy its claim. The 250,000 total remains the inventory to reconcile; it does not establish identical rights.
The first file supports a documented contractual right to payment in currency from an identified obligor. The second remains incomplete because the provider's obligation to the subsidiary has not been established. The working conclusion therefore addresses the two populations separately. The manager assigns an owner and deadline for resolving the 70,000-unit balance. Missing documentation is not converted into an automatic intangible-asset conclusion.
This example assigns neither a carrying value nor a journal entry. Token quantities, the nature of the rights and measurement require separate work that must be brought together in the reporting file.
Give group finance a reviewable deliverable
For each population, connect the holding, the cited clause, the dated document, the accounting judgement and any unresolved question. Name the preparer and reviewer and set a review date. A portfolio-wide statement about stablecoins is too broad when the underlying relationships differ.
The June 2019 IFRIC agenda decision considered a subset of cryptocurrencies without a contract between the holder and another party. It does not, by analogy alone, settle a holding with different redemption rights. [S4]
BECTRA can prepare the holdings-and-rights map, the clause matrix and the supporting close file. Enforceability questions are isolated for legal review where required. Management remains responsible for its accounting policy, and the appointed audit firm for its procedures and opinion.
Conclusion
The finance team's task is to make classification reviewable for each material population. Identify the obligor, resolve contractual ambiguities and assign owners to missing evidence before submitting the package. The deliverable should be a concise conclusion supported by documents and specific follow-up actions.
