Euro and US dollar stablecoins: does the reference currency change accounting classification?

For a finance team in France preparing IFRS reporting, a euro-referenced stablecoin and a dollar-referenced token differ by more than foreign exchange exposure. Start with the right actually held. The reference currency then informs measurement; it does not determine classification on its own.

Keep three currencies separate

The issuer’s advertised reference, the currency contractually due to the holder and the entity’s functional currency may differ. IAS 21 connects functional currency to the entity’s primary economic environment. Neither its registered office nor a wallet display alone documents that choice.

BECTRA’s proposed approach records these three facts separately in the closing file. Add the group’s presentation currency where it differs from functional currency. A platform quote is not evidence of the currency contractually payable.

Classify before calculating exchange differences

The June 2019 IFRIC decision examines a subset of cryptocurrencies with no contract between the holder and another party. It does not automatically classify every stablecoin. An advertised dollar peg establishes neither a dollar receivable nor immediate access to dollars.

BECTRA’s analysis starts with the terms applicable to the particular holder, the debtor’s identity and redemption conditions. Refer detailed classification to the existing classification memorandum. This file then addresses currency translation, without repeating the full classification decision tree or treating the token as a cash equivalent.

Separate reference from functional currency.

Select the rate from the measurement model

IAS 21 distinguishes monetary items translated at the closing rate, non-monetary items at historical cost translated at the transaction-date rate, and non-monetary items at fair value translated at the valuation-date rate (paragraph 23). Monetary classification turns on a right to receive a fixed or determinable amount of currency (paragraph 16).

Proposed application: record the measurement model, relevant date, rate source and quotation direction in the translation worksheet. Check the value in its relevant currency separately from translation. A token price decline and an EUR/USD movement describe different effects.

Worked example: isolate a translation effect

Illustrative assumption: an entity with a euro functional currency has already substantiated a fixed monetary receivable of USD100,000. Its initial equivalent is EUR90,000 at EUR0.90 per USD1. At EUR0.92 per USD1, the equivalent becomes EUR92,000: a EUR2,000 translation movement, with all other assumptions unchanged.

This calculation classifies no actual stablecoin. It assumes that the monetary right is established and excludes fees, credit losses and other possible adjustments. For a token without that right, revisit the analysis before using the worksheet. A fixed EUR100,000 receivable in the same functional currency would not require this EUR/USD translation; other risks would remain.

Connect measurement to its date.

BECTRA deliverable: the functional currency worksheet

The proposed worksheet has five fields: position and contract; classification conclusion linked to the signed memorandum; value in the relevant currency; dated rate; and functional currency calculation. Attach rate evidence and a general-ledger reconciliation. The closing owner can then determine whether a difference arises from token valuation, translation or missing information.

The scope is the holder’s IFRS reporting. French statutory accounts, tax and national permissions to hold or transfer tokens require separate assessments. This article does not conclude on European endorsement of every amendment for a particular reporting period.

Conclusion

A euro or dollar reference is a fact to document, not an accounting classification. Connect the contract, measurement model and selected exchange rate before closing the accounts, and retain any assumptions still requiring verification.
